Taking Photos on The Strip

I missed an entry last week because I was in Las Vegas without access to a computer. I was there for a conference, the Society for Technical Communication. It was the best conference I’ve ever attended, and I met many interesting people and learned a lot from the sessions.

The best part of trip was my Wed. afternoon jaunt down The Strip. I was staying at Bally’s, about midway on The Strip, and I chose to walk down to the Luxor, a hotel that has always fascinated me although I had never been there. Just the idea of a building shaped like a pyramid captured my imagination. After a very hot walk (it was 94 degrees), I stopped in the casino cafĂ© for ice cream and a cold beverage and then wondered around. Great fun. Next Las Vegas trip I plan to stay there!

I took many photos on my stroll. Mostly of hotels, of course. Who knows how they’ll come out, but it’s a sure thing that some will be great, some will be so-so, and the rest trash. One thing is for certain – none of them contains anyone I know. The perennial problem of the Single Woman Traveling Alone. I’m sure I could have asked someone to take my photo once or twice, if I had thought of it. This reminds me of photos of events my sister hosts, none of which shows her! Aaargh!

Perhaps there’s a bit of karma that needs creating in these situations. If I offer to take a photo for a couple, group, or single person, maybe I’d get an offer. If not, that’s fine, but almost certainly it would be easier for me to remember to ask someone to take my photo.

  1. Two comments: One-Travel is a great way to scrapbook that does not involve children. I went back to an album of a trip from 1995 (BW) to look something up. Most of the photos are of places and things not people. It is a great album full of information and I am glad I did when I we returned from the trip.

Two: I recently attended a totally fun bachelorette relaxation weekend. I took as many pictures as I could. After the weekend, I uploaded the pictures and sent copies to the guest of honor, who commented that I wasn't in any of them! At another recent event, I was in two photos. One was a nice picture of my rear end! Definitely ask people to take photos of you in front of things that you want to remember. The worst they can say is no and people are usually willing to take the 30 seconds to snap a photo.
